Dutch power TSO TenneT plans to invest €4-5bn/year in transmission lines

The Dutch power transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT plans to scale up to invest €4-5bn/year within the next few years to connect renewable energy sources and to develop a borderless European electricity market. In the first half of 2020, the TSO in the Netherlands and in a large part of Germany invested €1.4bn, a 30% increase compared to the first half of 2019.

In addition, TenneT has completed the Borssele Beta project in the Dutch North Sea, a high voltage connection for offshore wind projects Borssele III, IV and V, which will have a total capacity of 700 MW. By the end of 2023 TenneT will have built 3,500 MW offshore grid connections for offshore wind projects. The first 1,400 MW has been realised with the delivery of Borssele Alpha and Beta.

In the German part of the North Sea, TenneT has developed 7.1 GW of connection capacity, which already exceeds the German government's target for 2020. This target has been set at around 6.5 GW for the North Sea and the Baltic Sea together. Until 2030, TenneT' s offshore grid connection capacity in Germany will be increased to around 17 GW. TenneT is 100% owned by the Dutch state.
