The Dutch Port of Rotterdam plans to develop a 1 GW green hydrogen plant

The Port of Rotterdam Authority plans to develop a green hydrogen plant with a capacity of up to 1 GW at a facility in Maasvlakte (Netherlands). The port has announced this project ahead of a tender for the 2 GW IJmuiden Ver Wind Park, which will take place in the second half of 2023. The wind park and the green hydrogen plant that it will supply are expected to be completed by 2028.

The port is thus currently developing an 11-hectare site for the construction of the facility, which will offer space for 1 GW of electrolysis and be located next to the Amaliahaven 380-kV high-voltage substation planned facility (the destination of the direct current cable coming from the IJmuiden Ver Wind Park). A new pipeline will also run alongside the site and allow transport for the produced hydrogen.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority ambitions to achieve 2 to 2.5 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030. At the national level, the Netherlands plans for 4 GW of electrolysis capacity across the country by 2030.
