According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), electricity production in the Netherlands declined by 1.8% to 117.9 TWh in 2021. Thermal power generation fell by 11% , due to a 22% decrease in gas-fired generation - which accounted for 47% of the power mix in 2021 - that was partly offset by a 72% surge in coal-fired generation (14% of the power mix) and a 22% rise in renewable power generation (33% of the power mix). During 2021, the country added 3.3 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of wind, leading to a 30% rise in solar power generation (to 11 TWh) and a 17% increase in wind power generation (to 18 TWh); biomass-fired generation rose by 23% in 2021. Electricity imports increased by 6% and reached 20.9 TWh (higher imports from nuclear power from Belgium) and exports declined by 8% to 20.6 TWh.
