Gasunie, Open Grid Europe and Thyssengas have signed an agreement to jointly develop a cross-border hydrogen connection between Zevenaar in the Netherlands and Elten in Germany around 2031. The two national hydrogen networks will be interconnected, with existing natural gas pipelines being repurposed wherever possible for hydrogen transport (Gasunie press release, 21/05/2026). The partnership will link the German industrial and chemical sector with hydrogen production, storage, and import facilities located in the Netherlands.
Gasunie and Thyssengas are also advancing a second Netherlands–Germany connection under a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) signed in December 2026, while Gasunie is progressing a Netherlands–Belgium link following an April 2026 JDA with TSO Fluxys.
The Dutch state-owned company is also planning a 1,200 km hydrogen network across the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Thyssengas and Open Grid Europe are contributing to Germany’s 9,000 km core hydrogen network, designed to connect major production sites with import hubs and demand centers (Gas World, 21/05/2026).
