Duke Energy will submit license renewal applications to extend by 20-years the operating licenses for 11 nuclear reactors at six nuclear power plants in the Carolinas (US). The first license renewal application will be made in 2021 for the 2,500 MW Oconee nuclear power plant (3 units in South Carolina). Other assets in North Carolina include the 1,870 MW Brunswick, 2,316 MW McGuire, 964 MW Harris. In South Carolina the 2,310 MW Catawba, and the 741 MW Robinson plants are also concerned.
Most of Duke Energy nuclear power plants will approach the end of their current operating licenses in the early 2030s. Their licenses were issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and were supposed to be valid for 40 years. All Duke Energy-operated nuclear units have received one renewed license for an additional 20 years already.
The company has set aggressive carbon reduction goals of at least 50% by 2030 and net-zero by 2050.
