Duke Energy has inaugurated works to modernise and extend the capacity of its existing 470 MW Cayuga power plant in Vermillion County, Indiana (United States) (Duke Energy press release, 14/05/2026). The expansion project consists of the installation of two combined cycle natural gas turbines (CCGT) to increase the current capacity of the project by 470 MW to 1,476 MW, enough to power 1.1 million households. The project will use combined cycle technology, capturing waste heat to power a steam turbine to continue generating electricity. The first turbine is expected to start operations in 2029, and the second in 2030.
The Cayuga power plant is Duke’s oldest coal-fired power plant, with almost 60-years of service. Duke Energy, through its subsidiary in Indiana, owns about 6.3 GW of electric capacity, making it the largest electric supplier in Indiana.
