Dubai (UAE) inaugurates the 900 MW fifth phase of the Al Maktoum Solar Park

The government of the Emirate of Dubai (United Arab Emirates) has inaugurated the 900 MW fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which will be able to provide clean energy to about 270,000 Dubai households, and reduce CO2 emissions by about 1.2 MtCO2/year.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is located south of Dubai city and is the largest single-site solar park in the world with a total planned capacity of 5 GW upon completion by 2030. The park, which is expected to require a total investment of AED50bn (US$13.6bn), based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, is expected to reduce emissions by 6.5 MtCO2/year when fully completed.

The UAE’s solar capacity increased from 0.6 GW in 2018 to 2.7 GW in 2021, representing about 6% of the country’s total installed capacity. Solar represented 5% of power generation with 7.3 TWh in 2021. The UAE targets a share of 44% of renewables in the energy mix in 2050. The country also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.5% by 2030 compared to a BAU scenario and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
