Doosan Škoda has been awarded the contract for new generators for the Temelín nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. The company will replace the two original VVER-1000 units in operation at Temelín, which came into operation in 2000 and 2002 and are now approaching the end of their operational life. Under the contract, the generators, rated 1,086 MW each, will be replaced during planned outages in 2029 and 2030. The contract value was not disclosed.
In May 2022 the Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) granted ČEZ a licence to continue operating the Temelín 2 nuclear reactor. Temelín produces about 20% of the Czech Republic's electricity. Czechia aims to rise the share of nuclear power from 35% in 2013 to between 46% to 58% by 2040 (40% in 2024).
