The Dong Nai province (southern Vietnam) is seeking approval from the government for 8 solar power projects with a total capacity of 5.4 GW, located on the Tri An Lake, over 100 kilometers to the northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. One of these projects will have a capacity of 1,5 GW, two of them 1 GW each and one 0.6 GW.
If approved by the government, the Dong Nai province projects will double the solar capacity of Vietnam, which reached almost 4,5 GW by the end of June 2019. 89 projects started operation as of June 2019, and another 400 are awaiting approval. The registered capacity of solar power projects in the country has reached 25 GW, far exceeding the government’s initial target to have 4 GW by 2025. Renewables represent as of now for 9% of Vietnam's electricity mix, already surpassing the target of 7% set for 2020.
The increase in solar capacity has been recorded after investors sought to complete their solar farms prior to 30June 2019 – the deadline to benefit of the government’s solar feed-in-tariff (FiT) of US$0.09 per kWh for 20 years.
In August 2019, the 420 MW Dau Tieng solar power plant, the largest in the country, has been commissioned in Tan Chau District, Tay Ninh Province, around 100 km north of Ho Chi Minh City. The project costs reached VND 9.1tn (US$ 390m).
