Danish energy group DONG Energy has made a final investment decision to build the 1,200 MW Hornsea Project One offshore wind project in the United Kingdom.
Hornsea was granted a Final Investment Decision Enabling contract (Contract for Difference, CfD) by the British Government in April 2014 and will receive a fixed tariff for the first 15 years of production. The wind park, consisting of 174 turbines rated 7 MW each, is expected to be fully commissioned in 2020.
The company is the sole owner of the 1,200 MW, after having acquired a 66.66% stake in the project from SMart Wind (a 50-50 joint venture of Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services) in February 2015. In August 2015, DONG Energy also acquired the Hornsea zone and the project rights to Hornsea Project Two and Three, which have the potential of 3 GW offshore wind capacity, from SMart Wind. Hornsea will be the final stage towards DONG Energy delivering on its strategic target of installing 6.5 GW of offshore wind by 2020.
