Dominion selects turbine supplier for 2.6 GW US offshore wind project

US energy group Dominion Energy has selected Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) as the project's preferred turbine supplier for its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project (United States). The project will have an installed capacity of more than 2,600 MW, enough to power 650,000 average Virginia homes at rated wind speed. Dominion secured an offshore lease from the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in 2013. The group will install two 6 MW SGRE turbines in the spring of 2020, will start ocean survey work in 2020 and will incorporate it into the project's Construction and Operations Plan (COP) that will be submitted to the BOEM in late 2020.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is part of Dominion's clean energy strategy, which aims to cut CO2 emissions from the company's power plants by 55% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050; the company is investing in solar and wind, battery storage, pumped hydroelectric storage and other resources that can support intermittent solar and wind generation. In addition, the CVOW project is expected to help the state of Virginia meet its target to produce 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.
