Dominion Energy has applied to the local authorities of the US State of Virginia to build a 1 GW natural gas-fired power plant to help serve surging demand from data centres. The US$1.47bn Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) facility would consist of four 250 MW gas turbines and would enter construction in 2026, with commercial operations planned for 2029. If approved, the project would be developed adjacent near Units 7 and 8 of the existing 446 MW Chesterfield Power Station, and would not need new pipelines or transmission infrastructure.
The Chesterfield station entered operation in 1952, with six operating units (four coal-fired, two gas-fired) generating nearly 1,800 MW of electricity until 2018 when Dominion stopped the coal-fired Units 3 and 4. The company plans to expand its capacity at other existing gas-fired facilities, planning to add 44 MW of new generation to its 645 MW Possum Point Power Station in Prince William County, Virginia.
