Dominion gets final permits for the 2.6 GW CVOW wind project off Virginia (US)

The US company Dominion Energy has received the last two key federal approvals needed to start construction of its 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, located off the coast of the US State of Virgina. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has provided its final approval of the project’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP), while the US Army Corps of Engineers has issued its permit to allow for permitted impacts to US waters, including the route of the electric transmission line that will connect the power plant to the onshore grid.

The project should generate enough electricity to supply about 660,000 US households once operational. It will comprise 176 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, each with a 14.7 MW capacity, as well as three offshore substations. Offshore construction of the project will begin in 2024 and should be completed in 2026. The project is expected to generate US$3bn in fuel savings during its first 10 years of operation.

The United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035. The country also plans to reach 110 GW or more of offshore wind by 2050. As of end-2022, only 42 MW of offshore wind capacity was operational in the US.
