The Virginia State Corporation Commission (United States) has awarded a final state approval to Dominion Energy for its 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project from. The project, located 43 km off the coast of the US state of Virginia, could enter construction in 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will cost about US$9.8bn. The project meets all the state’s statutory requirements for rider cost recovery and the issuance of a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the onshore infrastructure. Around 17 miles (27 km) of new transmission lines and other onshore infrastructure has been granted as part of the approval. In December 2021, Dominion Energy selected Siemens Gamesa to deliver offshore wind turbines for the project. The scope of the contract includes 176 turbines (SG 14-222 DD) rated 14 MW each and a 10-year Service agreement.
The CVOW project is expected to help Virginia meet the targets of the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which requires the State to have 100% clean energy by 2045. The United States aims to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and to permit at least 25 GW of onshore renewable energy by 2025.
