Dominion Energy secures local permit for a 3 GW CCGT project in Virginia (US)

In Virginia (United States), the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors has approved the conditional use permit for Dominion Energy Virginia’s Cumberland Energy Center, a proposed 3,000 MW gas-fired CCGT power project (PowerInfoToday, 22/10/2026).

The plant would comprise two advanced-class 2-on-1 combined-cycle units, burning natural gas with fuel oil as backup. It would sit on a site of about 61 ha (150 acres) off Duncan Store Road in Cumberland County. Dominion describes it as baseload capacity enough to power up to 750,000 homes.

The project still requires an air permit from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Construction is targeted for 2029, subject to these approvals, and could be completed in 2034.
