The State of West Virginia (US) has announced the proposal of Dominion Energy to build a 2.6 GW natural gas-fired power plant alongside its existing 1.6 GW coal-fired facility in Grant County, West Virginia (US local government press release, 28/07/2026).
Plans for the proposed Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station have been submitted to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to modify the site's air permit and incorporate the new project (West Virginia Watch, 28/07/2026). According to the filing, the proposed facility would operate with four combustion turbines fuelled by natural gas, with commercial operations targeted by 2033.
The project is intended to help meet rising electricity demand across the PJM Interconnection region, particularly from data centres and advanced manufacturing facilities. The electricity generated by the plant would primarily serve Virginia, although excess power could be supplied to the wider PJM grid, which serves 13 US states.
The company also stated in its permit application that the new facility could increase annual greenhouse gas emissions at the site by approximately 75 ktCO2, while adding emissions of other pollutants including carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides.
