Dominion Energy aims to develop 21 GW of CO2-free capacity by 2039 (US)

The US energy group Dominion Energy has released its 2024 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), and submitted it to local authorities of the US states of Virginia and North Carolina, specifying multiple portfolio options to meet rising power demand.

According to the plan, Dominion Energy plans to bring about 21 GW of new clean energy capacity online over the coming 15 years, including around 12 GW of new solar capacity, 4.5 GW of new battery storage and 3.4 GW of new offshore wind (in addition to the 2.6 GW currently in development), by 2039. The plan also includes five small modular nuclear reactors (SMR’s) with a combined capacity of 1,340 MW to be developed in the mid-2030s.

To face increasing supply demand, Dominion plans to continue relying on gas-fired assets, which are expected to provide about 20% of Dominion’s generation, while its SMRs and long duration energy storage (LDES) are developed, planning to bring online 5.9 GW of gas-fired generation between 2030 and 2036.
