The US company Dominion Energy has launched the start of construction of the 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, as it announced the installation of the first monopile foundation at the site. The CVOW project, located off the coast of the US State of Virgina, is the largest offshore wind project under construction in the US.
The project will feature 176 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines and will be able to power about 660,000 US households once completed. Dominion Energy received the last two key federal approvals needed to start construction of the wind park in late January 2024. Completion is expected for 2026.
The United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035. The country also plans to reach 110 GW or more of offshore wind by 2050. As of end-2023, only 42 MW of offshore wind capacity was operational in the US.
