The US Department of Energy (DoE) announced the availability of a US$50m funding opportunity developed through the US Office of Fossil Energy to design, build and operate two large-scale pilots for transformational coal technologies with demonstration projects expected to be initiated in the 2030–2035 time period. These projects are meant to upgrade coal-fired systems' performance, efficiency, emission reductions and power costs. The funding will be awarded under the framework of a call for proposals and the applicants are expected to have demonstrated technical success at a small-scale pilot stage and a 20% minimum cost share on total award values.
The call for proposals will involve three phases: a feasibility phase and a design phase in which projects will have to complete a front-end engineering (FEED) design study. The two finalists will be selected for the third phase and will start the construction and operation phase.
