DEWA commissions 200 MW solar PV power plant (United Arab Emirates)

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has completed the construction of the second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar power project, which is expected to generate 1,000 MW by 2020.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar power project, developed on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, is developed in phases, with the first one of 13 MW commissioned in 2013. The second phase of 200 MW was built by a consortium of ACWA Power International and TSK and is now ready for commercial operation. The third phase of 800 MW, awarded in November 2016 to a consortium led by Masdar, is expected in 2019-2020. In the long term (by 2030), the park's capacity could be raised to 5,000 MW, with total investments of AED 50bn (13.6bn).

In addition, DEWA has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar project. The project will consist of a 200 MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) power plant, expected to be commissioned by April 2021. Proposals from qualified bidders will be received until May 2017.

In the long term, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 aims to increase the share of clean energy in Dubai total energy output to 7% by 2020, 25% by 2030, and 75% by 2050. DEWA aims to reach 1,000 MW of CSP by 2030.
