Two utility-scale battery energy storage (BESS) projects totalling 5,200 MWh have been submitted under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
The first, proposed by BID Energy, is the Kiar BESS, a 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh standalone project to be built in the Central Coast region of New South Wales. The project will connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM) and construction is expected to last between 18 and 24 months, with commissioning planned for late 2027 or early 2028. The installation will operate for 25 years before decommissioning.
The second project, led by X-Elio, is the Canyonleigh BESS, a 300 MW/1,200 MWh facility planned in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, near the company’s proposed Willavale Park Renewable Energy project. That nearby project includes a 72 MWp solar PV plant with 300 MW/600 MWh of battery storage. Canyonleigh BESS will connect to the NEM and is expected to require 12 to 18 months for construction and grid connection. The system will operate for 20 to 30 years.
