DET receives FSRU for Germany’s Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal (4.6 bcm)

The state-owned German LNG terminal operator Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET) has announced the arrival of the FSRU Excelsior to complete the Wilhelmshaven 2 terminal in Northern Germany. The FSRU will be installed offshore at 2 km south of the Wilhelmshaven 1 terminal (commissioned in 2022). The 138,000 m3 plant will be connected to the gas grid and put into operation, carrying up to 1.9 bcm of natural gas, after passing through safety test for the commissioning. In the coming two years, the vessel is expected to reach a regasification and grid feed-in capacity of up to 4.6 bcm each, enough to power 3.7 million homes. The Wilhelmshaven 2 represents DET’s third operational terminal in the country, after the Wilhelmshaven 1 (7.5 bcm/year) and Brunsbüttel (8 bcm/year).  A fourth terminal, the 13.3 bcm/year Stade LNG terminal is currently under development and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

According to preliminary data from the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), German gas imports amounted to 865 TWh (-11%), of which 69 TWh of natural gas were imported via the country’s LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Lubmin and Mukran, representing about 8% of the country’s total imports.
