DET completes operational structure of 4 bcm/year FSRU terminal (Germany)

The state-owned German LNG terminal operator Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET) has announced the completion of the operational structure of its Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) for the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal, located in northern Germany. Following the conclusion of a public tender process, the Lithuanian company KN Energies has been contracted to take care of the technical operation and maintenance tasks of the terminal starting as of early May 2024. The terminal’s new jetty is still under construction, located some 1.5 km offshore Wilhelmshaven and commissioning is expected in the second half of 2024. The FSRU should have a capacity of about 4 bcm/year (maximum regasification capacity of 5.1 bcm/year).

DET currently operates three other FSRU-based LNG import terminals in Germany, two operational (the Wilhelmshaven 1 LNG terminal featuring the 170,000 cbm “Hoegh Esperanza” and the Brunsbüttel LNG terminal in which features the 170,000 cbm “Hoegh Gannet”), and the Stade FSRU-based facility with Stade FSRU-based facility, which has yet to receive a commissioning cargo.

Germany has LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Lubmin, Brunsbüttel, as well as in Mukran, which received its first FSRU, ‘Energos Power’, in February 2024. In 2023, LNG terminals accounted for about 7% of total German gas imports.
