DESFA plans a €1bn hydrogen pipeline between Greece and Bulgaria

DESFA, the Greek natural gas transmission system operator, plans to construct a 540-km hydrogen pipeline connecting Greece to Bulgaria, forming part of a future European southeastern corridor. The €1bn project, jointly proposed with Bulgaria, has received initial technical assessment approval from the European Commission, qualifying it for inclusion in a list of European projects of common interest (PCI). DESFA is a subsidiary of DEPA, the state-owned natural gas supply company of Greece.

In October 2022, ICGB commissioned the 3 bcm/year Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) gas pipeline project between the northern Greek city of Komotini to Stara Zagora in Bulgaria. The 182 km project connects to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project, carrying Azeri gas, through the Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline (ITGI), to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project and to the Revythoussa LNG terminal in Greece.
