Denmark’s first full-scale CCS project (400 ktCO2/year) reaches FID

Partners INEOS Energy, Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden) have reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Greensand Future project at the Nini field in the Danish North Sea. The project will capture and liquify the CO2 at Danish biomethane production plants, to be then transported to the port of Esbjerg (Southeastern Denmark), and shipped to the Nini West reservoir to be stored 1,800 meters below the seabed. Expected to become operational at the end of 2025/early 2026, with INEOS Energy as its operator, the Greensand Future project aims to store up to 400 ktCO2/year in its initial phase, with plans to increase its capacity to up to 8 MtCO2/year by 2030.

Greensand Future builds on the successful Project Greensand pilot which, in March 2023, demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of cross-border, offshore CO storage across the full value chain - from capture to transport and storage. The project will constitute Denmark’s first full-scale CCS project, operating within the C2023-01 IRIS offshore CO2 storage license.
