Denmark issues permit for Baltic Pipe gas pipeline to Poland

Denmark’s Minister for Energy and Climate has issued construction permit for the Baltic Pipe Project in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea. In Danish maritime area, one section of the 10 bcm/year gas pipeline stretches from the shoreline at Faxe Bay to the border of the Swedish sea zone. The other part links up Sweden’s territorial sea to the Polish maritime territory, through Danish exclusive economic zone. The length of the pipeline in Denmark’s waters reaches 133 km.

The Baltic Pipe Project route in Denmark was approved by the Danish Environment Protection Agency in July 2019. The two project developers, Polish gas transmission operator, Gaz System, and its Danish counterpart, Energinet.dk, expects to receive environmental permit for the part of the pipeline located in Poland, as well as Swedish construction permit by the end of 2019.

Gaz-System and Energinet.dk both made positive investment decisions for the development of the project in December 2018. The project would be made of five parts: one offshore pipeline in the North Sea between the Norwegian and the Danish gas transmission systems across 105-110 km, then a 210-230 km gas transmission section and a compressor station onshore Denmark, a 275-km offshore pipeline between Denmark and Poland across the Baltic Sea and a 230-340 km onshore gas transmission pipeline in Poland. The project is expected to be commissioned in October 2022.
