The Danish Energy Agency has approved that the Nini West field, located 240 km northwest of Esberg, may be used for geological storage of CO2, as part of the Greensand Future project, developed by INEOS E&P, Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden (the Danish North Sea Fund) (Danish Energy Agency, 18/12/2025). The licence applies to the storage of up to 2.4 MtCO2 for a period of 30 years. This is the first time that a permit has been granted for a CO2 storage project in Denmark.
According to the Energy Agency, "CO2 is stored in a sandstone reservoir 1,700-18,00m below the seabed, which has overlying layers of sealing rock. The Nini West field has previously been used for oil and gas production. For the storage of CO2, the existing facility from the previous oil and gas production, Nini-A, will be reused."
