Denmark approves new power interconnection to Germany

The Ministry for Energy, Utilities and Climate of Denmark has approved a new power interconnection project between the Eastern Danish and German electricity grids via offshore wind parks in the Baltic Sea, as proposed by the country's energy transmission network operator Energinet.dk's.

The 400 MW interconnection is a joint project between Energinet.dk and its German counterpart 50Hertz. The Combined Grid Solution (CGS) project will enable Denmark and Germany to exchange power: as the interconnection connects two different electricity areas, it will be necessary to build a facility in Bentwisch (Germany) which can synchronise electricity from the Eastern Danish and German systems. The Tolstrup Garde substation in Denmark, which connects to the Kriegers Flak wind park through a 220 kV line, will also be upgraded.

With the approval, the Danish-German project worth €320m can start entering contracts with suppliers. The CGS connection must be ready by the end of 2018.
