Czechia’s ČEZ plans to shut down 600 MW of coal-fired units at Dětmarovice

The Czech state-owned power utility ČEZ will shut down three coal-fired units with a total capacity of 600 MW at the Dětmarovice power plant by the end of 2022. The company plans to build four gas-fired cogeneration (CHP) units with a total output of 45 MW at Dětmarovice.

In the last two years, ČEZ has reduced its coal-fired power generation in Czechia, closing the 440 MW Prunéřov I power plant, suspending operation at two units at the Ledvice power plant (220 MW) and at the first unit in Dětmarovice (200 MW). In addition, the group has converted the 80 MW Ostrava-Vítkovice coal-fired power plant to gas. Since January 2021, ČEZ has not operated the Počerady power plant and it will shut down the 500 MW Mělník III lignite-fired power plant in 2021.

In December 2020, the Czech Coal Commission recommended ending the use of coal in power generation and heat production in Czechia in 2038, after assessing several coal phase out scenarios in 2033, 2038 and 2043. The 2038 target is on par with the phase-out date set by Germany and much ahead of that set by Poland (2049). The government will have the final say.
