The Czech Republic relaunches its nuclear policy

The Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Czech Republic has created three working groups in the Standing Committee for Nuclear Energy, to focus on the financial, legal and technical-investment strategies. This measure is aimed at giving a "new impetus" to the implementation of the State Energy Policy (SEP) for nuclear development.

The SEP was approved in June 2015 and planned the development of a new reactor at the Dukovany nuclear power plant. The SEP also considered the development of up to three additional units at Dukovany and Temelin. Up to 2,500 MW could be added by 2035 and more thereafter. It recommended that national power utility CEZ creates a subsidiary to carry out nuclear projects and explore financing options, as the country rejected any state guarantee on electricity prices.

The Czech Republic expects nuclear to be the main source of electricity by 2040, with a share ranging between 46% and 58% of the power mix by this date. This would reduce the share of lignite to 21%, while that of renewables would grow to 25% (15% for gas).
