Cyprus’ Government, through the country’s Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA), plans to revive a 2 Mt/year LNG import terminal project located in Vasilikos, Cyprus, which has suffered delays. ETYFA is thus preparing to sign a contract with a yet unnamed European consultancy firm, which will oversee the remaining work on the terminal, almost six months after the sudden withdrawal of the Chinese-led CPP-Metron Consortium (CMC).
ETYFA, a joint venture between CYGAS (Natural Gas Public Company, 70%) and EAC (30%), had signed an EPCOM with the CPP-Metrom Consortium in December 2019 under a 24-month deadline for completion. After delays, CPP withdrew from the project in July 2024, accusing the Cyprus Government of failing to pay for work completed in 2024.
The regasified LNG is expected to supply EAC's 868 MW Vasilikos power plant, which alone accounts for 37% of Cyprus’s installed capacity. The LNG terminal is now expected to be completed in April 2026 at the latest, if development goes according to plan.
