Cyprus' Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism has launched a new plan to promote residential solar development and the installation of 5,000 rooftop PV residential systems: 450 low-income households will receive €900/kW to install up to a 3 kW net metering system to cover half of the installation costs. The government also aims to promote additional rooftop PV systems for businesses via net metering (5 MW) and solar PV systems (5 MW).
In 2013, 2,000 low-income households had already been eligible to a similar subsidy, that was later extended to include a further non-subsidised 3,000 rooftop residential systems (9 MW) and industrial and commercial rooftop net metering systems totalling 10 MW. However, only 300 of the 2,000 eligible households installed net metering systems. Currently, net metering installations total about 10 MW, while the installed PV capacity is 33 MW.
Despite broad support for renewable energy, the nation's limited grid remains a problem for future expansion of renewables.
