CWP Global joins 600 MW green hydrogen project consortium in Angola

The renewable project developer CWP Global has entered into an agreement to join an existing consortium grouping together Angola's national oil company Sonangol, the African infrastructure developer Gauff and the German investment firm Conjuncta and currently developing an up to 600 MW green hydrogen production project in Angola.

The project is designed to use spare capacity from existing hydropower generation to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia. Ammonia production from Phase 1 of the project is expected to reach 400 kt/year, with the scope for increasing the capacity in future phases. The partners of the consortium are now looking forward to establishing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), and continuing with the development of the Front-end engineering (FEED).

CWP develops large-scale renewable hydrogen hubs, and aims to supply emerging international markets for green hydrogen, green ammonia and other derivatives, including green iron. CWP’s current portfolio of green hydrogen hubs includes 8 projects located in Africa, Australia, South America, and North America.

In its updated NDC (2021), Angola targets to reduce its GHG emissions by up to 15% in 2025 and 21% in 2030 as compared to a BAU scenario. Under a conditional mitigation scenario, the country could further reduce its emissions by 25% and 36% in 2025 and 2030, respectively. Identified mitigation actions focus mainly on the development of renewables for electricity generation and on reducing gas flaring. The country also published its new “Angola 2050” strategy aiming for over 60% of electricity supply from renewables in 2035.
