Croatia will invest €180m to more than double the capacity of its Omisalj floating LNG terminal, located on the Adriatic island of Krk, to 6.1 bcm/year (from the current 2.6 bcm/year), as well as build a new gas pipeline which will connect the towns of Zlobin and Bosiljevo in Northwestern Croatia. Of the €180m, about €25m will be allocated to the Omisalj FSRU facility expansion while €155m will be invested in the pipeline part of the project. No schedule was yet given for the completion of the project.
Croatia is following the current European trend of trying to secure and diversify its gas supply sources, amid deteriorating relations with Russia and increasing unreliability of gas supplies due to the war in Ukraine.
The floating LNG terminal on the Krk island, which has begun operations since January 2021, has initiated the diversification of supply for Croatia, which until then relied heavily on Russian gas and on its own production (750 mcm in 2020). The Omisalj LNG terminal project was developed by the national power utility Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP) (85%) and the national gas transmission system operator Plinacro (15%).
