Corio submits application for a 450 MW offshore wind project in Ireland

The renewable developer Corio Generation has submitted an application for consent to the Irish planning authority An Bord Pleanála for the development of a 450 MW offshore wind project, to be built off Ireland’s west coast. The Sceirde Rocks wind project could power 350,000 Irish households, as well as offset emissions by an estimated 550 ktCO2/year. The project is expected to contribute to the Irish Government’s target of sourcing 80% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

In May 2024, Ireland’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Communications launched its “Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy”, a long-term model to deliver 20 GW of offshore wind by 2040 and at least 37 GW by 2050. The country only had about 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity at the end of 2023, but nearly 4.8 GW of onshore wind. Five other projects currently proposed for development are all situated off the eastern coastline.
