The Danish renewable energy company Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security for the 504 MW Ichnusa floating offshore wind project, which will be located about 35 km off the coast of the island of Sardinia, Italy. COP is leading development for the Ichnusa project on behalf of the project’s owners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) through its Flagship Funds, and GreenIT, the joint venture owned 51% by Plenitude (Eni) and 49% by CDP Equity.
Ichnusa is part of a nearly 3 GW floating portfolio COP is leading development for in Italy. The portfolio, which could power approximately 2.5 million Italian households, includes the 500 MW Tyrrhenian project off the coast of Civitavecchia, 3 projects off the coast of Sardinia including Ichnusa, the 500 MW Nurax project, the 1,000 MW Poseidon project, and the 250 MW 7SeasMed project located off Sicily.
Italy aims to reach 20 GW of wind capacity and cover 55% of its total electricity consumption with renewables by 2030. As of end-2021, Italy did not yet possess any operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh).
