ContourGlobal has announced the start of operations of the battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Victor Jara hybrid plant, in Tarapacá, Chile, capable of delivering 6.5 hours of continuous power output (ContourGlobal, 27/05/2026). Paired with the on-site 231 MWp solar PV plant, the storage system enables the delivery of up to 200 MW of energy, capturing solar energy during periods of low demand and dispatching it during late-afternoon peaks and nighttime demand.
The Victor Jara Facility includes a 15-year night-only PPA with Copec EMOAC, one of Chile’s renewable energy suppliers. It brings greater flexibility and enhanced stability to the Chilean electrical system.
Since 2019, Chile’s solar capacity has quadrupled, reaching 11.2 GW in 2025 (27% of total capacity, compared to 10% in 2019), while its wind capacity was multiplied by 2.4 (5.3 GW, in 2024 or 13% of total capacity.
