Construction starts on the 2.1 Mt/year Woodfibre LNG project (Canada)

Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW), a joint venture between the US’ McDermott and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has started construction of the Woodfibre LNG project, located near Squamish, in British Columbia, western Canada. The Woodfibre LNG project, owned by a Canadian subsidiary of Singapore’s Pacific Energy, is a 2.1 Mt/year LNG export facility with 250,000 cm of floating storage capacity.

In November 2021, Woodfibre LNG awarded an engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction (EPFC) contract to McDermott. A notice to proceed was then issued for the project in April 2022. The project is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2025.

Canada, which is the world’s fifth largest natural gas producer with an output of 205 bcm (2022), exports around 40% of its production to the United States by pipeline. More than 15 LNG exports projects with a total capacity of 90 Mt/year are at different stage of development in the country.
