Construction begins on a 1.25 GW interconnection between Canada and the US

The government of the US state of New York has announced the start of construction for the 546 km-long, 1.25 GW Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line, which will link the Canadian province of Québec to the city of New York in the United States. The transmission line, first approved in April 2022, is being developed by the company Transmission Developers and will be able to deliver 10.4 TWh of clean electricity, generated by the Canadian company Hydro-Québec, to New York.

The interconnection project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026 and could provide about 20% of the electricity needs of New York City. The project is also expected to bring US$3.5bn in economic benefits to New York state, reduce carbon emissions by 37 MtCO2 and help the state achieve its goal of reaching 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and a zero-emission power sector by 2040.
