Constellation gets conditional USD5bn loan for nuclear uprates in the US

The US energy group Constellation Energy has secured a conditional loan commitment of up to USD5bn from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to expand nuclear output through uprates across its reactor fleet in the United States (Constellation Energy press release, 27/10/2026). The financing would support projects to increase the output of existing nuclear reactors, extending the role of nuclear power in meeting growing electricity demand. The plants under consideration eight power plants in Illinois (Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities), Maryland (Calvert Cliffs) and Pennsylvania (Limerick).

Constellation has recently signed 20-year agreements with Google and Amazon to support about 1,080 MW of added nuclear capacity: 890 MW on the PJM grid for Google and 190 MW at Calvert Cliffs for Amazon. Another agreement with Meta supports a 30 MW expansion at Clinton. Constellation expects more than USD7bn of private investment tied to the Google and Amazon agreements and expects that the DOE loan could lower financing costs.

Constellation has 55 GW of capacity across nuclear, natural gas, oil, geothermal, hydro, wind and solar, enough to power the equivalent of 27 million homes.
