A consortium comprising T-BESS 1 (a subsidiary of the German energy group Trianel), the Swiss energy group BKW and Luxcara has started construction of the 900 MW/1.8 GWh Waltrop BESS project in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany (Trianel press release, 21/09/2026). Site preparation and infrastructure works are underway, while delivery of major equipment, including the substation, transformers and battery storage systems, is scheduled for July 2027. Commercial operation is targeted for the second half of 2028.
The project entered the construction phase after receiving final permits for the battery systems and substation in May 2026 and shareholder approval in July 2026. According to previous project plans, the installation is expected to be deployed in two phases of 300 MW and 600 MW, with potential expansion to 1.5 GW at a later stage. Luxcara will be in charge of developing 520 MW, BKW of 300 MW and T-BESS 1 of the remaining 80 MW.
The Waltrop BESS ranks among the largest battery projects in Germany and is designed to provide flexibility for an electricity system increasingly supplied by renewable energy sources.
