Congo plans to double capacity to 1.5 GW by 2030, focus on renewables

The Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Energy has announced that the country plans to double its power generation capacity to over 1.5 GW by 2030, largely through the development of renewable energy projects. This initiative aims to enhance electricity access for Congolese households and support industrial growth in the country. The ministry also stated that the government had already identified 4 GW of hydropower potential in the Brazzaville region (around 27 GW in the entire country). Power generation sources would also be diversified with solar and gas-fired projects, such as AMEA's 50 MW solar project near Brazzaville or Wing Wah's 400 MW gas-fired power project (of which half would be integrated to the country's grid).

As of end-2023, the Republic of Congo had a total installed capacity of about 830 MW, comprising 603 MW of gas-fired power (73%), 214 MW of hydropower (26%) and 12 MW of biomass (1%).
