Congo launches studies for a new 510 MW hydropower plant

The Congolese Ministry of Energy and Hydraulics has launched technical studies for the 510 MW Kitéké hydropower project on the Congo River, near Loufoulakari, in the Pool Department, about 35 km south-east of Brazzaville (Congo) (ADIAC, 29/01/2026). The consortium of companies Lincoln and China Energy, an affiliate of the Chinese state-owned company Gezhouba Group, is taking part in the technical study phase. The two firms could eventually handle the design, procurement of equipment, construction, as well as certain aspects of financing. No official figures have been released regarding the total amount of investment planned for the project, but construction is expected to start in 2027, subject to the completion of the studies. The power plant may supply the cities of Brazzaville in Congo and Kinshasa in Congo DR thanks to a projected 400 kV transmission line.

Previously, in 2017, China’s Gezhouba Group complete the construction of the 19 MW Liouesso hydropower plant in the Sangha Department. Congo has 27 GW of hydropower potential, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy and Hydraulics.

Hydropower accounted for 26% of Congo’s total capacity in 2024 and 22% of its power mix, which is dominated by gas (70% in 2024).
