Conditional approval for 3.1 GW Etalin hydropower project in India

The Forest Advisory Committee of the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests has approved upon condition the 3,097 MW Etalin hydropower project in Dibang Valley district in Arunachal Pradesh (in north-eastern India). The Ministry of Power is yet to give the final nod to the project. The power project is developed by the Etalin Hydro Electric Power Company, a joint venture between Jindal Power and Hydro Power Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh.

India's hydropower potential is estimated at 145,000 MW at 60% plant load factor. The country has set a target of 175 GW of renewable power capacity by 2022, including 5 GW from small hydropower. Under a draft amendment of the Electricity Act, hydropower could be included within the renewable purchase obligation (RPO) targets set for the state power distribution companies. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India, the hydropower capacity in the country is expected to reach 70,000 MW by 2030. At the end of 2019, the total hydropower capacity stood at over 50 GW - including 45.4 GW of large hydropower capacity (above 10 MW) - and more than 12.7 GW are currently under construction, with another 8 GW expected to start construction before the end of the year.
