Commonwealth LNG signs MoU for CCS project in Louisiana (US)

The US energy company Commonwealth LNG and OnStream CO2 (a joint venture between Carbonvert and Castex Carbon Solutions) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at its 9 .3 Mt/year LNG facility currently under development in Cameron, Louisiana (United States). The agreement determines that OnStream CO2 should oversee the design, construction, owning, and operation of the CCS equipment where the captured CO2 is going to be permanently sequestered at the Cameron Parish CO2 Hub, with Commonwealth dedicating the CO2 emitted from its LNG facility for a 20-year term.

At the end of 2022, the US installed capacity amounted to 1 187 GW, of which gas constituted a total of 42%. In 2021, the US administration pledged to reduce the country’s GHG emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030. This target was included in the country’s updated NDC in 2022, with an intermediate goal of 26-28% below 2005 levels in 2025.
