The Colombian Government has announced that it will apply a 30% tax on a group of products from Ecuador and will suspend the sale of electricity to that country (Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy press release, 22/01/2025), in response to a matching tariff announced previously by the Ecuadorian Government, citing reasons related to an alleged lack of cooperation on security matters.
In 2024, Ecuador imported 1.3 TWh of electricity, with Colombia accounting for most of imports. Imports represented 4% of Ecuador’s power consumption in 2024. The country is interconnected with Colombia (two 230 kV lines and one 138 kV line, for a capacity of 525 MW) and Peru (one 230 kV line, 110 MW).
