Colombian court revokes suspension of the Uchuva-2 offshore gas well

A Colombian court overturned a previous court order issued last month suspending operations at Sirius-2 (formerly known as Uchuva-2), a major offshore gas well in the Guajira Offshore Basin (Colombia). The suspension was issued following a complaint from Indigenous communities for the project’s development potential negative effects on their way of living.

The court ordered the Colombian interior ministry to conduct a consultation with the indigenous community of Taganga within a month to allow them to have a say on the development of large oil, mining, and infrastructure projects. The project is owned jointly by Ecopetrol (55.56%) and Petrobras (44.44%).

In October 2024, the Brazilian state-owned oil and gas company Petrobras and its Colombian counterpart Ecopetrol announced that new discoveries made in Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 have a gas potential of 6 tcf (170 bcm). At the end of 2023, Colombia had about 80 bcm of proven gas reserves.
