The Colombian government has presented its Portfolio for the socio-ecological transition, which concentrates the initiatives that will consolidate the path towards the country’s energy transition. The portfolio consists of 20 strategic projects aimed at promoting economic development, with the government inviting the participation of the productive sector and international cooperation. Colombia plans to invest US$40bn in the next 10 years in sustainable production systems, diversification of the energy matrix (biogas, green hydrogen and sustainable mobility), ecological restoration of landscapes, conservation of strategic ecosystems, electromobility, among others.
In 2023, the Colombian Ministry of Mines announced that the country would not issue new oil and gas exploration contracts and would now rely on tourism and green energy to fill the gap. At the end of 2023, Colombia had a total installed capacity of 20 GW (66% hydro, 14% gas, and 8% coal).
