Colombia plans to repair 5 bcm/year gas pipeline with Venezuela

The Colombian government has announced plans to repair a 5 km gas pipeline connecting Colombia to Venezuela (Colombian government press release, 11/03/2026). The reparation plan of the Antonio Ricaurte binational gas pipeline aims to resume gas transportation between both countries. A work group agreed to reactivate the project’s environmental license, which had been suspended since 2019, to start replacement works on the Colombian side of the pipeline. The work group was composed by the Colombian Ministries of Mines and Energy and Environment and Sustainable Development, the National Environmental Licensing Authority (ANLA), as well as of representatives from the Colombian branch of Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).

The project, also known as the Trans-Caribbean gas pipeline, started operations in 2007 as an integration initiative between both countries. It connects the gas fields of La Guajira (Colombia) with the Lake Maracaibo region (Venezuela), extending through 225 km (of which about 88 km are in Colombia) and has the capacity to transport approximately 5.15 bcm/year of natural gas.
