Colombia aims to speed-up environmental licensing for renewable power projects

Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has presented a measure package to speed up environmental licensing for renewable projects. The plan consists of 19 measures to remove obstacles for delayed of frozen projects in the country’s renewable pipeline. Among the measures, Colombia plans to introduce a new methodology for the assignment of electricity connection points, the creation of the National Information System of Renewable Projects under Colombia’s UPME, and the review of legally defined guidelines for granting permits for geothermal exploration and exploitation.

The program is led by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and other government agencies, as well as state-owned energy companies ISA and Ecopetrol. The Ministry plans to publish the measure program for comments in the coming days, with the aim of diversifying the energy matrix, facilitating the development of new technologies and to guarantee electricity supply in the coming years.

Besides the measure package is also promoting the 6GW Plus Plan, which seeks to diversify and decarbonise the energy matrix and add an additional 6 GW of renewable capacity. According to Colombia’s MME, 52% of renewable projects in the country are stalled due to bureaucratic procedures.
